Liposomal iron for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in women of reproductive age: a review of current data

In this review, we discuss the technology of liposomal iron formulation, its absorption mechanisms, and clinical evidence for its usefulness in iron deficiency conditions in pregnant and non-pregnant women. Based on the available data, we compared liposomal iron with conventional oral iron. The encapsulation of micronized iron in liposomes is associated with less exposure to gastric contents, less interaction with food content, no exposure to various digestive juices, targeted delivery of iron, and allows for lower doses instead of direct absorption without the need for protein carriers. Evidence suggests that liposomal iron significantly increases hemoglobin and ferritin levels in pregnant women and women with iron deficiency.
